Eugene Weekly Manager Pleads Guilty to 100 Thousand Dollar Embezzlement That Nearly Sank the Paper

Community rallied with 200 thousand dollars to save alternative weekly after trusted employee's betrayal

So Eugene's alternative newspaper almost died - and the reason why is going to make you angry and sad at the same time.

Elisha Young, the 38-year-old business manager of Eugene Weekly, just pleaded guilty to embezzling over 100 thousand dollars from the paper she was supposed to protect.

Let that sink in. The person managing the finances was stealing from a community institution that's been informing and entertaining Eugene readers for decades.

Young pleaded guilty to five felony theft counts on March 24th. She faces up to 36 months in prison when she's sentenced on May 27th.

Here's the thing that hits me the hardest: Eugene Weekly nearly shut down because of this. A paper that covers local government, arts, culture, and issues that bigger outlets ignore - almost disappeared.

But then something amazing happened. The community stepped up. People donated over 200 thousand dollars to keep the Weekly alive.

That's Eugene right there. When our local institutions face existential threats, we rally.

The case raises uncomfortable questions about small business vulnerability. How do you protect yourself when the person you trust most betrays you? Eugene Weekly wasn't some faceless corporation - this was personal.

After all, small local media outlets operate on razor-thin margins. One bad actor can destroy decades of work.

Here's the rub - Young had access because she was trusted. That's how these things work. The people who can do the most damage are often the ones we've placed our faith in.

What do you think? How can small businesses protect themselves from internal theft without creating a culture of distrust? Is there a balance? Drop your thoughts on facebook.
