Brush Fire Near Eugene Prompts Evacuations and Road Closures

Firefighters Battle Blaze as Residents Urged to Stay Alert

On the evening of August 20, a brush fire ignited in the 85500 block of Scharen Road in Eugene, Oregon, rapidly spreading across an estimated 2 to 5 acres.

The fire was reported around 5 p.m., prompting immediate action from local authorities and emergency services.

Evacuation orders were swiftly implemented for residents at the end of North Hideaway Hills Road, while Hampton Road was closed to traffic.

Additionally, traffic was halted at Highway 99 to ensure public safety.

By 9 p.m., the Lane County Sheriff's Office downgraded the Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation order to a Level 1 "Be Ready" status for areas including Hideaway Hills to the power lines east of Skyhawk Way, from Hampton Road south to Dillard Road.

Similarly, the Level 2 "Be Set" evacuation order was reduced to Level 1 for neighborhoods between Dillard Road, Hidden Meadows Drive, Skyhawk Way, and Ridge Top Drive.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though initial assessments suggest it was accidental.

Air support was deployed to assist in combating the blaze, and firefighters worked diligently to contain the spread.

Smoke from the fire drifted southward, carried by a light breeze, affecting air quality in the surrounding areas.

Sgt. Tim Wallace, spokesperson for the Lane County Sheriff's Office, stated, "It seems to be stabilized if not under control. We do not believe it's arson; it appears to be accidental."

In response to forecasted high temperatures and an extreme heat warning from August 22 to 24, a fire watch was issued beginning August 21.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to any further instructions from local authorities.

For the latest updates and information, residents can contact the Lane County Sheriff's Office or visit their official channels.

Staying informed and prepared is crucial during wildfire season to ensure the safety of all community members.
